A wonderful, serious piece appropos for the time is "Will There Ever Be a Time" by Elizabeth Raum, written for and recorded by John Griffiths. The tubist plays and narrates movements that point to the senselessness of war, neighbors fighting neighbors, etc. There are multiphonics and sounds of guns, tanks, etc. It is anything but hokey---very moving if done well in fact. It also offers opportunities for exploration with regards to staging which I'm sure Betsy would encourage. When I discussed this piece with John, he felt that he sounded too "angry" on the recording, and would have perhaps done some things differently, but John plays it beautifully. Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions about the piece. Requires an advanced, agile performer.
