There are several problems that I see younger musicians make on the day of state and district auditions. One problem is that people arrive late for the audition. Early is on-time and on-time is late. Remember, anything that can happen will happen (especially before an audition). Allow enough time to properly warm-up, take care of any business, get to the audition room, etc. Second, spend ONLY the amount of time you need to warm-up (maybe start your prepared piece a couple times) in the group warm-up area. It is easy to wear out your chops or get psyched out by the guy/girl who can play faster/higher than you in the group warm-up enviroment. Three, come prepared. Plan ahead, have your audition requirements ready well in advance of the audition day (don't procrastinate). Four, remain calm and focus on the task at hand. Avoid problems 1 & 2, stay away from sugar, caffeine, and distracting people (that good looking girl, the guy who wants to talk shop, or the high strung parent). Keeping your mental edge the day of an audition always works in your favor. ~ Ash
