As your friend spends more time with the instrument, the intonation will improve. There is always an adjustment period to any brass instrument. After he (and you) get used to the Besson, blending will start to happen with much less effort. I went through this when I was trying different tubas in band for about a semester. I went through about four different horns which included a Miraphone, VMI, Meinl Weston, and a Willson. Intonation was not my friend! After I stuck with the Willson, it took a about a month to really learn the new tuba to point to where I wouldn't have to think so much about blending and intonation. It became more instinctive and less of a concerted effort.
