At least a few years ago the situation in my country was, that some (if not all) brass/wind houses refused to carry Hirsbrunner tubas. The mark-up (in %) allowed by the maker was only a fifth of the one, that could be had by selling high end clarinets from the most prestigious French maker.
The players wanting a Yorkbrunner contacted Hirsbrunner directly, but they were not added to the waiting list until they had put down around 40% of the current end price. And they were neither given a definite date of delivery, nor a fixed final price, when they made their down-payment.
So the problems are different over here, but they exist.
Klaus,
who sillily turned down an offer to try out a Yorkbrunner back in 1990, but who was amazed by the playing ease of the prototype of the 4+1 F tuba tried out at the same occasion.
