Wow, I just don't follow that one.

Here's what I get from the World Bank data for 2001 (the most recent available): Switzerland per capita GNI is $36,970, USA GNI: $34,870. (some other data is that Switzerland has a higher life expectancy, about half the US infant mortality rate and is a net exporter rather than a net importer). In other words, the idea that Switzerland enjoys a lower standard of living doesn't seem to be borne out by the numbers.

So why would it be cheaper to build tubas in Switzerland than in the USA? And if that's really the case, what is the USA doing to discourage manufacturing within its borders?
