If Dean wanted to take a gamble, he could try fllling that crack with a leadless solder like J.W. Harris Stay-Brite. The joint would have maybe a third of the strength of a brazed joint, but it might do in a pinch if the crack isn't progressing.

Carefully using a medium heat (acetylene-air) and a high-silver braze like Stay-Silv 56 would probably leave the plating intact and give you a braze that's very close in color to silver. I've done cracks in silver-plated bells this way without damaging the plating (but you've got to be REALLY careful with the heat and heavy plating helps). You'd need to unsolder the handle before brazing, though, which creates cleanup problems of its own.

Regardless, I'd never dream of guaranteeing the outcome--which is why a repair tech who has other things to do would rather not bother.

Just thinking aloud.
