I had the pleasure to hear Chris McShane & the RPO play Fountains of Rome & the Bartok Concerto for Orchestra on the same program. This was about 5 yrs. ago at the State Theater in New Brunswick New Jersey. Mr. McShane used his E-flat for both works and in my opinion he sounded fantastic. I didn't care the least bit that he used a smaller horn. In that hall under those circumstances it worked. I can't vouch for any other hall. I don't think B.G. was putting Mr. McShane down. In his opinion he thought he should use a bigger horn.
That said it is a general rule in this country that the "person with biggest toy wins" and anything different is a joke. In the end I don't care if the tuba player is using a GG## tuba just as long music is made.... one more thing being different can be good.
