Nickel plating looks nice when it's new. As it ages it tends to turn grey, especially where it is in contact with your skin. (It can also cause nasty allergic reactions in some people.) You can clean it up fairly well with fine steel wool, but not quite like new. It can also start to peel off, leaving sharp edges. If you are planning to sell the tuba then go ahead and make it look snazzy. But if you want to keep it and use it for many years then leave it raw brass. That's one material that the finish never wears off from.
Plating pistons is tricky business, best left to the pros. It's really annoying to see the plating flaking off the pistons of your favorite tuba.
