I got my degree on the trumpet, but turned to the tuba about a year ago (so happy I switched!). Trumpet players like the bigger tubas because it means that they don't have to work so hard on the ensemble pianissimos. The trumpet is not the most intimate instrument and it takes work to make the thing blend in for chamber work. So there is a huge difference between an F tuba and a nice safe forgiving cushion provided by a CC or BBb horn. And yes it does also mean they can let loose on the louder stuff more convincingly.

I agree that you should get the opinion of the group, but ultimately it is you that has to make the decision. Best advice is to bring both horns depending on what you are playing. If you are playing orchestral transcriptions, stick with the contrabass 5/4, but if you are doing period music or purely chamber work, bring the F. My guess is that your group will take a liking to the versatility to the overall group sound and love you for it.
