When I was a kid, I attended a LIVE Spike Jones performance (I suppose that dates me). What impressed me about the tuba wasn't that it was the right size and shape to be that big Martin horn. It was that the tuba was PAINTED, with representations of flowers all over it! At the time, I thought it was the most fabulous sight I had ever seen. [Of course, it sounded great. Jones only hired the best musicians for his band. Like his stuff or not -- it was all done exactly on purpose.]
To this day, tubas with mere brass or silver finishes seem, well, dull. However, I have yet to call in the decorators to do a Spike Jones style remake on mine.
