I agree with Rick that if one knows the merchandise (or brings someone who does), one can cheerfully do business with anyone -- even someone whom the naive should avoid.
I would add, though, that one should still consider the possibility of needing service of some kind, such as fulfilling a warranty. I used to buy (and sell) camera equipment from some sharp characters. These people had no problem taking advantage of a person who didn't know prices. However, they would always make good on a deal. So, using an appropriate amount of wariness and market knowledge I did business with confidence.
