The old German way of making a full chromatic scale available down to pedal Bb on single valve Bb instruments was to use an Eb valve.
That implied slide only down to low E natural, and then continuing from 1st position with the valve depressed. Not a method allowing for smart slide shortcuts. Yet I once saw a bassbone method directed towards this set-up. The method called for a fairly demanding agility.
The instrument hopefully poping up above here is not a bass trombone. Yet it illustrates an idea, which was fairly widespread in Germany:
Two main tuning slides. The one having a valve, which was operated via a thong. Even the valve has two, apparently 4-legged tuning slides. One for F and one for Eb.
