A bass bone makes lower playing much easier by having a larger bore and bell, but mostly by using a much larger mouthpiece.
In the deep past, bass trombones were pitched in G (or F) and had an extra extension handle on the slide. Now, they are pitched in Bb and get the extra range by using valves.
But you can have a bass trombone with an F attachment that has the same theoretical range as a tenor with an F attachment. The lowest notes on the bass will be easier to play and will sound better, though.
