This is true. We listened to 19 players at the national level, including some very good players. After three rounds, the unanimous decision was that the most accurate, best in tune and most musical playing was done by the candidate who turned out to be Dave Reid, currently 2nd trombone with the CPO. Although his success on the bass trombone was impressive, it was not a huge surprise to those familiar with the talent of this musician. He is a fine pianist, a virtuoso euphonium player (you can hear his work on the recording made by the Albertasaurus Tuba/Euph Quartet) and an outstanding jazz player on both trombone and euphonium. All three rounds were behind a screen. I happen to know that the runner-up was the current bass trombonist with the Spokane Symphony, whose playing gave me personally a lot of pleasure.
