I am not a strond advocate of marching drum corps to improve "tone". I have benefitted from playing outdoors however by practicing outside 4 hours in the morning before my classes started in college. You have to be careful to monitor what comes out of your bell. I really enjoyed playing outside for many reasons (I went to college in Florida).

A point of interest to everyone on the anti drum corps campaign may be the finalists in the BSO auditions. Mike Roylance made to the finals who is an excellent player and musician. He also marched for something like over 10 years in the only "professional" drum corps that used to be around (in Central Florida) 5 days a week for seven shows a day. Even on one of those GG contrabass bugles. Marching around and acting happy for the paying guests. So you can be an excellent tuba player after marching drum corps or similar activities.
