This may be true for some, but not for all. I know my tuba professor (a former student of Tucker Jolly) once told me that in the 5 years he taught me, some of my best improvement came when I got back from the summer not from the hours spent down in the practice room. In corps, everyday I was learning from a former student of Rex Martin, Arnold Jacobs, and Gene Pokorny... it was like a 10 week masterclass for me.

Many college students that get summer jobs, end up neglecting their practice routine. In drum corps, you have no choice but to have a mouthpiece up to your face for several hours everyday for 10 weeks. While most college students spend the first month of school getting back into shape, I always came back from the summer with incredible endurance, a big fat sound, and tons of new knowledge.
