I would agree with some of the suggestions on the board so far - long tones, mthpc. buzzing, study with a competant professional; but the one everyone neglected was LISTEN!! Listen to as many great musicians as you can and soak up their sounds! And not just tuba players - I learned volumes about phrasing and tone from people from Yo-Yo Ma to Miles Davis and everyone in between. Develop a clear image of the tone you want to produce and go get it!
