As far as appearance is concerned, trust me: nobody knows the difference or even cares what kind of tuba you play. The only important considerations are personal comfort and getting the kind of sound you want. For small groups with no drums and no piano I like my Weril because it's light and agile. But when there is a drummer and/or piano it becomes a pea-shooter, and then I prefer a bigger horn. The nice thing about helicons and sousaphones is that you can stand up, move around, and do stuff with your left hand while playing. A plastic sousaphone gets the job done very well except when there is a low ceiling to contend with. I love my four-valve Beuscher helicon with its short bell, but it does get heavy if I have to play it non-stop for long sets.
