As a corporate HR Manager (by day) I have to look at the history of recent problems the BSO has encountered. Look to the serious problems encountered with the recent trumpet court actions. A precedent has been set. The Symphony has to make decisions that are not going to land them in a similar situation. Once you have given one person a contract for life it is almost impossible to NOT give one to a new player. By law once you set a precedent you have to live with it. Otherwise you are open to discrimination lawsuits and these are very expensive, time consuming and they take time away from the job you were hired to do. They MUST avoid that same situation but if it should occur (the contract) you at least want someone sitting in your section that you can get along with and will play tastefully with incredible execution no matter what.

It might be that, because of the trumpet situation everyone is afraid to "pull the trigger" and hire someone because it may come back to haunt them.

Just the view from my other world.
Roger
