I would like to challenge your comment on avoiding practice mutes. As an experiment many years ago, I had the Summer off from gigs so I practiced every day with a practice mute. I didn't hear the sound of the open horn for 3 months. I did this on my F as well as the CC. I worked to get as clean and clear a sound as I could on the practice mute and actually came to like the sound after a while.
When I took the mute out after 3 months the difference was incredible! I had great endurance and my sound had matured because I was trying to get the "pig" (the horn with the mute in it) to sound good. It worked. I also had developed an incredible amount of power that I had to learn to rein in a bit and my body had learned to conserve air better through the subtle changes that had occurred in my buzzing to get a good sound out of the muted horn.

Just my experience with it.
Roger
