Unlike in the UK and Europe, the popularity of brass bands in the U.S. in the 1800's yielded to the concert band with Gilmore's and Sousa's integration of woodwinds into the ensemble.

The brass band movement saw a renaissance of sorts in the US around 1980, and has been growing ever since. Check out the NABBA website below for more information, including why all the parts (including the tuba parts but not including bass trombone) are written in treble clef.
