How about Arcana or Ameriques by Edgard Varese? I would suggest the LA Philharmonic conducted by Zubin Mehta from the early 70's. Arcana utilizes two tubas which was played by Roger Bobo and Tommy Johnson with Mr. Johnson hitting the pedal G at the end. It is on the London label and available.
DG put out a Varese CD with Chicago and Boulez recorded from 95, released just a few months ago. Not as gutteral in my opinion, but still not something to listen to at 3 in the morning in the dark. It was nominated for a Grammy, whoop-ee......
