Yes, he did. I've heard the recording, and it is stunning--the very best part, in my opinion, of the Portrait of an Artist CD.

But that doesn't in any way affect the observation I made down below. If you go out front, and it sounds the way you want it to sound, then go for it. In the case I mentioned, the choice of instrument was, I believe, limited by the instruments on hand as much as anything. Perhaps the musician in my story wished at the time that he'd still had a good 4/4 tuba, or one with a bit more focus in the sound. Or, perhaps, maybe he made the choice based on a less live rehearsal space.

Or, of course, maybe my observation is all out of whack, heh, heh.
