I'm going to have to go against the grain, and suggest that MAYBE you try a St. Pete. With a valvejob, they're good horn for the money. If you're a responsible adult, and take all the neccessary precautions, a St. Pete is no more of a dent magnet than the $10,000 brand W or brand H tuba.

...as far as resale value goes, the St. Pete is the only horn I've seen on eBay that'll sell six-months-and-ten-dents later for at or above the original purchase price, and fairly consistantly at that. St. Pete's hold their value just as well as Miraphones... the same certainly can't be said for Willson or Hirsbrunner... what does that mean? Absolutely nothing.

That being said, it's my personal opinion that the majority of the other tubas mentioned in this thread are of better quality than the St. Pete's... but my opinion doesn't matter. Try them out and get what YOU like(4 hours really isn't that long of a drive!).

Best of luck!

Anthony
