Klaus,
What U.S. Army Bands are allowed to wear and display is governed by the Army Regulation on wear and appearance of the uniform, and by authorization from the U.S. Army Institute of Heraldry. Being part of the Military District of Washington, the United States Army Band (Pershing's Own) is a truly unique unit, and are no doubt authorized to wear all sorts of historical garb. Klaus, if you ever have the opportunity to witness a performance by the Old Guard, I think you would enjoy that. It is an authentic representation of a 1770's U.S. Continental Army ceremonial marching unit, complete with a musical unit.
