this is the kind of bifurcation that gets our friends like tucker below all spun up (hey Dave howyadoin?) One likely cause for "Tragedy"s concern has NOTHING to do with ridiculous low budgets, rather it has EVERYTHING to do with a total lack of district, county, or statewide accountability for how spending takes place, as well as a sorry lack of meaningful measures to demonstrate the effective outcome of spending.
In U.S. Federal government there has been a 10-year-old initiative to implement something called "Full-cost Accounting"...interestingly implementation just sort of didn't happen for the first eight. The military may seem to be enjoying a renaissance of hawk-lover funding, but the FACT is that the military is far closer to being able to account for how it's moneys are spent today (so don't talk about 300 dollar toilet seats, thats a 25-year old story.)
When educators are forced to abandon bloated inefficient administrations and move toward use of classroom metrics which demonstrate meaningful learning by our youth, THEN they can have legitimate claim to more funding. As it is now, "Tragedy"s kind of thinking really has nothing to do with the military-and the unfortunate mention of DoD simply allows "academics" to continue to avoidavoid the kind of fiscal scrutiny they deserve!
