I've heard it live and seen the movie--at the same time.

The Fort Worth Symphony played the soundtrack live. The movie was projected onto a screen behind the orchestra, with English subtitles. I don't know how they removed the music from the voices and sound effects unless they found the masters. I gathered that the movie package was making the rounds of symphony orchestras that year, and that was something like the late 80's. The orchestra played well and managed to stay in synch with the movie without losing the pulse, which is more than I can say for the re-recorded sountrack of Fantasia that came out about twenty years ago.
