This topic comes up very frequently, so some archive searching with the keyword "notation" might bring up something useful.
The short version is:
Tubas comes with different fundamentals: F, Eb, CC, and BBb.
Outside the UK and some other countries also bordering on the Channel all tubas are notated in concert pitch bass clef. The latter fact most likely is the reason why you have been told, that tubas are in C.
