There is a point in all performer's lives that comes when you discover the "Undiscovered Country" (tm).

The area in question is where you discover that you can produce the required sound and articulation the conductor/director requires of you in one situation, and then completely remove yourself from that style of performance for the next person who demands a particular style.

As you might imagine, we all try to please the person who is teaching us. We all run into times when a conductor/director demands a certain style from the performers so that a certain sound happens. The best thing to do is to get to the point that you can give each what they want, and realize which is best for each situation.
