These were usually done with gold plate. Some people have used lacquered brass in the bell of silver plated instruments to look like gold, but these historic instruments usually had real gold plate. In fact, most of the manufacturers offered various levels of finishes that usually included a couple of different versions of completely gold plated horns.

I have a Conn euphonium made in 1917 that is completely gold plated, except where it has worn away down to the silver. I have seen many trumpets/cornets, saxes, and trombones that have been gold plated, but you see many fewer tubas and euphoniums with complete gold plate just because of the cost.
