Kyle,
I have a couple of suggestions. Spend a lot of time shopping. Play as many different instruments as possible, as much as possible. Don't be in a hurry to purchase- good things come to those who keep their eyes and ears open, and wait. Keep an open mind. If I were shopping for a tuba now, I'd buy the horn that was a truly great instrument for me to play, regardless of what key it was in. If you play the new, popular model XYZ and your sound has no "soul" to it and intonation is so-so, try another horn. If you play a lot of horns and find that you sound best on a 1942 Buescher 4-valve BBb, then that's probably the horn for you. Remember, you have plenty of time to shop around, and lack of patience in this matter can cost you money and cause regrets.
