In a former life, I made more than most "I-need-to-get-out-of-this-orchestra-into-a-better-orchestra" tuba players playing jazz, brass quintets, broadway shows, recording sessions, church orchestra gigs, polka band stuff, and off-the-wall gigs. I tried teaching at a couple of large "institutions of higher learning" but it wasnt'...fun.
I still play (fewer jobs / mostly higher pay), but I wouldn't trade those years playing all of that "fun" stuff with amazing and diverse players for the same number of years in a R.O.P.A. orchestra. It was a great life...It just wouldn't have covered my kids' tuition payments very well.
a "and I have all the respect in the world for R.O.P.A. orchestra players - particularly in their ability to be hired in the first place" guy who I think agrees with you
