A friend of mine who lives in Brevard, NC and who studied at major conservatories, Tim Bryson, is a collector of ophicleides, cimbassi, tubas, trombones. One instrument that he had "made" in Germany is a "hiking tuba", which he had made in Germany, per this tradition.

He took a Mirafone 184-CC, had a Kaiser euphonium bell put on it (in place of the original 184 bell) and made up the difference in length with a custom mouthpipe. When he was in Germany with this instrument, he would actually hike up into the mountains with it strapped to his back and play across from one mountain to the other, enjoying the resonance and the echo effects.
