I have used a small torch before. Just set the torch up so it stands alone and then hold the two ends of the hose close to the flame untill they are hot enough to stick together. Don't worry if it gets a burnt color because it got too hot. It's rubber you can cut the very end of and try again. The best way I have found to put the ends together is with a rubber o-ring kit that as a little vice and an electric hot knofe to heat the ends. That is what I use, if you know anyone who has one see if they will let you use it. It works the best.
