That's a good question. I would speculate that like any instrument the basis of sound is vibration. The more it vibrates over the years, the easier it will vibrate. I think of it as a "loosening up" period. I really have never talked to an engineer or any qualified person about this. I would love to know more about this so please all you metal gurus chime in.
