I should have added that while the solo finds its way on most audition lists, the tuba player who already has the gig will do himself no harm if he decides that the second trombone player can play the solo more musically on a euphonium. Then, he can play the low part with a large horn.

All the pros talk about doing this, but for some reason most still play the solo themselves when it comes down to it.

I heard reports from a non-tuba-playing friend of one orchestra pro who clammed it on a CC tuba (during all rehearsals and all performances!), and then three years later clammed it on an F. When they played it again a few years after that, the tuba player played it on a euphonium, and clammed it again. Not all professional orchestras have world-class players, by the way.
