I finally purchased a digital Radio Shack decibel meter. Very interesting discovery. My basic average volume is in the 95 db. range. The max on standard orchestral licks I have done has been about 110. I play a 6/4 horn, but it's only a bit lower in volume on my other smaller horns.
A 95-110 db. Range seems like it would be unhealthy for the ears. I'm going to take it to an orchestra rehearsal this week to see what this is like.
My question is what experiences do any of you have using a decibel meter (I only found a few entries in archives) and what do you think is a safe level for a one-tuba practice session?
