There are those in all professions who do pro bono work - the attorney who represents a client with a just cause, a physician who does surgery on a child from a third world country. Then there are those who leave the big bucks of private industry to take an appointment as a government official. In these cases, time and/or money is given to help society in general.

There is the spreading of information in a certain discipline - here are the various journals. In music there are times we play and do not get paid what we deserve. We do this to preserve an art form. In the music community, we need to do this for survival. Today I played for free in a community orchestra that is on the brink of extinction. Why? It needed to be done to preserve the art of music.

Writing something for the Journal without getting paid helps preserve the art - If we won't do it, who will?
