Pat, I think it's great that your son is serious about playing the tuba. Unless your family income is very comfortable and $3000 is not a lot of money to you, I would encourage you to wait on purchasing a new horn. 15 year olds are notorious for changing thier minds about things and in the event he doesn't want to play anymore I would hate to see you stuck with an expensive horn. If the high school he is going into owns some decent tubas why can't he play on one of those for a couple of years? If you decide he definately needs a tuba now you should think about buying a good used horn. The odds are that the horn you buy today will not be suitable for use in college so purchasing a new one doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Good luck and encourage him to practice a lot! A half hour a day now will help him more than 2 hours a day when he's 20!
