So my 14 year-old son comes home from 8th grade band with info' about 9th grade band try-outs. His Euphonium audition will include, among other stuff, an exerpt of the solo from the first movement of the Holst 2nd suite. Beautiful bit....

Just out of curiosity, I flip over to see what the tuba audition piece would be..... turns-out one of the items will be the first part of the Hartley Suite. Cool....

Is this the usual way for H.S. bands to place young musicians? I know I never auditioned for H.S. Band as a rising 9th grader. Back then they welcomed another tuba (or euphonium) player with open arms! I guess the challenge is good, but the bar sure seems a higher now than it was 30 years ago! I'm not complaining, just perhaps a little jealous that I didn't get pushed harder.
