The York in question is a standard-size Eb; the "monster' has a bell that's somewhere around 19"-20" in diameter. Actually, this is good news if you're interested in practicing your industrial arts skills and whacking this one down to an F--the Monsters make lousy F tubas. It's my contention that the first couple of large branches on a Monster have more of a BBb taper to them, and the smaller branches make up for the too-slow taper. When I gratfted a 3J CC valve section onto a Monster, the tapers lined up like magic from the first two large branches on the York to the remainder of the large tubing from the 3J. The result plays quite nicely; though like the original 3J, the F and Bb take a little 1st slide work to get in tune.
