Yours is the voice of wisdom. Players should always try to maximize their single tounging. Nothing worse than some brass player resorting to badly-executed double or triple tounging when the passage could/should be single tongued. Sixteenth note duplets and triplets usually seem to excite some players, and cause them to screw up by bad attempts at multi-tounging.
