Dave Zerkel has got it exactly right.
First and foremost the applicant has to nail all the excerpts and prepared
pieces with NO clams. Sight reading will always be an important part of
military band auditions and the only way to practice is to read as much new
music as you can find.
Once the committee has selected the players who "just don't miss", the job
will go to the one who demonstrates the most musicality.
