In fact, this is what the term "alternate fingering" is all about. If you have a decent tuner, try playing some notes using various fingerings and notice that some have a note better in tune than others. Sometimes, this isn't the same fingering that the book says to use. Many BBb tubas play middle-of-the-staff D better with 12 than as open and low D better as 3 rather than 12. Experiment a bit! Every tuba varies a bit from others and alternate fingerings can make it much easier to deal with problem notes.
