Fred Young did do some analysis of taper design as it affected the intonation of all the partials. It would be a tough doctoral thesis for a music major--heavy, heavy, heavy on the mathematics--unless the student was a double-major of physics (acoustics) and music.
My approach was more empirical, but not nearly quantitative enough to qualify as scholarly. And I would be more interested in factors beyond intonation.
