Thanks to all. I did manage to get the Audio Technica microphone from the ebay auction, for about $75 less than the best street price I could find. I would not have even known of this mike without your input. My wife (who is buying this present) thanks you.
I called my sound industry professional buddy and read off specs to him, and his response to the cheaper Sony was that it would not record a tuba. The better Sony was "better". When I read off the Audio Technica specs, he said, "Okay, that's a professional microphone, except that it doesn't have balanced inputs." Of course, my new disc recorder won't have balanced inputs, either.
