I think that Cerveny makes two types of F tubas, but the one I played felt good down there. I will admit that I have played enough F's that are weak down there to anticipate the "goofyness" of the Eb to C range. I feel that a lot of us try to blow those notes like we would on a CC causing 95% of the problem. I feel that if you back off a hair, slow down the air and sometimes even slightly close the aperture, that this register improves greatly. Upon playing these horns with an audience that the weirdness of the low register doesn't always come across in the sound. I think that this is where the strength of the embouchure comes into play. If your muscles go by pitch and not feel than you will be in better shape than trying to go by feel alone in the low register. I think the mystery of this register is those of us using a CC or BBb feel and it doesn't transfer to F very well.
