Well, I don't play a VMI anymore. My high school got 2 new VMIs in 1999 and I've been using one of them since just a few weeks ago (when I got my own tuba). But my experience still allows me to answer your questions, except the first one.

I didn't purchase the VMI, and I don't know where the school got it, though I know it was from a catalogue and they got it fall of 1999.

What I like about my VMI is that it plays so cleanly. The sound is clear and you hardly have to adjust the pitches of individual notes once you set the slides correctly. I have lots of control.

My favorite feature is the 4 rotary valves. They are quick, clean and smooth.

Though I didn't buy it, my VMI was by far the best tuba I've ever played. It's sound is the fullest, was the easiest to play, and of course it is pretty pretty pretty. :)

I don't have any particularly interesting anecdotes, so I'll spare you of boredom and refrain from sharing. :)
