Don't knock using lamp cord as speaker wire. Once I got a call to wire a house in Maine. All I could find was 19 gauge lamp cord and wired 8 pairs of speakers with it. It sounded great. A year later there was an 8 page spread on the place in Good Housekeeping!
About the speaker wire challenge with 50 splices, I did a house where the owner changed his mind a dozen times. I spliced the place up big time. There was a spread in Archetectural Digest on the place.
Moral of the story, even those places that are in magazines sometimes are pieced together, even in never-never land.
