Making a tape is a special skill and winning or losing the tape round doesn't always translate into the same results at the audition. There have been winners and finalists for the BSO whose tapes did not get passed, but came on appeals and obviously were qualified. If you want to hear what it takes to win a job, listen to anyone that has one. It takes great playing to get any job. The difference in competition between auditions for big and small orchestras is less than you think.
